Times in which normal things are no longer normal. Such as hugging each other (skin hunger) and eating with your family during the holidays (hunger for eating together). Natural, self-evident needs are no longer self-evident. If something is forbidden, the desire for it can increase. For example, the desire to eat together can become filling rather than nourishing. By this, we mean that you start making poor food choices in order to still get a feeling of satisfaction. How do you prevent hunger from becoming filling?

Meaning of skin hunger

Hunger literally means a need for food. You can also use the word hunger for an intense need for another, a strong desire. For example, the hunger for physical contact. That is also how the term 'skin hunger' originated. A severe need for something that is no longer there, namely hugging a loved one. By meeting while observing the 1.5-meter distance, you do see each other and make contact, but the need to touch each other remains unfulfilled. Hence, skin hunger. A good solution is to talk to each other more. One example is consciously meeting more online, so that you do see and hear each other. That creates more contact. So don't wait until the holidays, but make an appointment tonight to meet via Teams or Zoom, for example. Play a game together or simply reminisce.

Eating together is a surrogate solution for skin hunger

Eating together is in human nature. This is because humans originally relied on each other's strength to put a varied diet on the table. That is why we still enjoy eating together so much. Now, make this a lasting habit. Start by eating together more often with your family, preferably daily. If you do not have a family, organize a shared meal with friends or family weekly, or if possible, several times a week.

Making a virtue of necessity

From filling to feeding

This is how everything comes together. Filling oneself up is a major negative aspect of how holiday dinners are prepared. As long as it is tasty and plentiful, that is. Excess is then lurking around the corner. Are you planning to spread out multiple dinners with fewer people? Then it is worth paying attention to your choices regarding what you put on the table. Beautiful, small, healthy, nutritious dishes provide fewer calories and a boost to your health. Here are a few tips to achieve that:

Ensure that all dishes contain vegetables

Ensure small portions; use small plates for this.

Use small cutlery

Do not use saturated fat during preparation.

Use as little fatty sauces as possible with the dishes.

Allow plenty of time for the meal

Make sure you have topics to talk about during dinner. For example, ask each other the who, what, where, and how questions.

Make sure your dishes contain enough fiber. Also read our blog about fiber.

Help for variation

The Nutrition Centre offers on its website beautiful healthy recipes to vary your diet.
