Will Delft residents have healthier lunches?

No more Hema sausage sandwich

We read this last week in the digital newspaper: Indebuurt edition Delft:

“Would you like a cream cheese sandwich, smoked sausage or egg salad at the HEMA kiosk during your lunch break? That is no longer possible. The pickup location at the Paradijspoort has recently closed.

A note hangs on the window stating that the kiosk has been closed since January. “We are not generating enough revenue, which is why we have closed the stall. It is practically final that we will not be reopening,” an employee adds.”

Smoked sausage is mainly fatty and salty

Insufficient turnover means little to no demand for items such as a smoked sausage sandwich. An analysis shows that half a 150-gram smoked sausage contains 480 kcal, 45 grams of fat, and 3 grams of salt. The bun is always white. Combined, this is not the healthiest lunch choice.

Will Delft residents have a healthier lunch?

Unfortunately for Hema, but in itself we consider it good news that these sandwiches have little to no demand in Delft. Does this mean that people in Delft are making healthier choices? That would be wonderful. But what exactly is a healthier choice?

Vary with whole wheat wraps and vegetables

You can prepare whole wheat wraps two or even three days in advance. You can fill this with leftover vegetables or slices of tomato, cucumber and cottage cheese. Wonderfully lean and nutritious. For the gourmet, a tablespoon of low-fat mayonnaise is the icing on the cake. A salad is also always good for lunch. Combine various vegetables with egg, fish and/or fresh cheese. Success assured.

This way you get fiber, vitamins and minerals. If you prepare the salad in advance, wait before adding the dressing. Then the vegetables remain nice and crunchy and you can make the salad a day in advance.

Conclusion:

There are many healthy variations on a smoked sausage sandwich. Think of whole wheat bread with lean toppings. If you like it hot, a fried egg, omelette or well-filled vegetable soup is a good choice.
