If losing weight just isn't working and you have a BMI above 40, you might be tempted to opt for gastric bypass surgery.

In our Personal Training studio, we are seeing an increasing number of people who have undergone gastric reduction surgery. The group that has opted for this is primarily those who have been overweight for a long time. If your BMI is above 30, you are overweight; if your BMI is above 35, it is referred to as obesity. The group that struggles the most with weight loss is the obese group. Sometimes they reach a BMI above 40. This is referred to as morbid obesity. If you have tried everything for years to lose a few kilos, only for it to come back on so quickly, you become discouraged, and the temptation to choose a quicker solution is great. Many have relapsed into their old habits and gained weight again after the surgery. The reason is that no attention was paid to behavioral change.

What are the surgical stomach reductions?

In bariatrics (a specialty in weight), there are several types of procedures that ensure decisive weight loss. We explain them below:

  • Gastric reduction using a gastric band or gastric tube. A procedure in which the stomach is reduced in size by means of a band around the stomach.
  • The stomach bypass called Gastric Bypass. A procedure in which the majority of the stomach, the duodenum, and a portion of the small intestine are separated from digestion.

The pros and cons of gastric reduction surgery

The greatest benefit is, of course, the weight loss, which can amount to up to 50% of current weight. This can have health effects. Moving becomes easier and the risk of chronic diseases decreases.

However, there are also many disadvantages.

  • Risk of dumping syndrome (nausea caused by overeating)
  • Risk of bleeding, leakage, stomach ulcer, gallstones and kidney stones
  • Risk of gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, abdominal cramps, and bloating.
  • You can no longer eat certain foods
  • Risk of hypoglycemia, this means blood sugar that is too low more often
  • Risk of developing lactose intolerance
  • Vitamin deficiencies (causing hair loss, fatigue, or other symptoms)
  • A lot of excess skin because she lost a lot of weight quickly
  • Postpone the desire to become pregnant until 1 or 2 years after the surgery.

All these disadvantages are severely underestimated. Beyond the risks that can even result in death, the quality of life also declines drastically if you experience one or more of these disadvantages.
