You read more and more about it: fasting, or in other words, periodic abstinence from eating. There are various claims about this way of eating. You are said to lose weight, become healthier, and feel fitter. In this blog, you will read what it entails and whether all these claims are true.
The most commonly used fasting diets
Op dit moment zijn er diverse soorten vasten programma’s in de omloop. Ze worden aangekondigd als Intermittent fasting wat betekent, periodiek vasten.
For example, there is the 16:8 diet. You drink only water, tea, or coffee without additives for 16 hours and eat nothing. After this, you are allowed to eat and snack as you please for eight hours.
A variation is the 25/100%. This means that one day you consume 25% of your normal calorie intake, and the next day 100%.
Is it good for your health?
Research has shown that you do indeed lose weight with this method of fasting. This is hardly surprising, as you structurally consume far fewer calories. Cholesterol and other blood values were also favorable. One would therefore think that intermittent fasting is a good way to lose weight and that it gives your health a boost. However, some caveats can be added.
Long-term effects
As with all diets, it is important to look at the long-term effects. It is important that you get all the necessary nutrients, so you will need to ensure you maintain a balanced diet on the days you eat. Snacking indiscriminately is not really a good idea. Another risk is the constant feeling of hunger during fasting, and you never really get used to that. There is always the risk of developing an overwhelming craving (snacking). Just like with all diets, sticking to a diet is important for the long-term effects. This diet will be difficult to stick to.
It is also the case that your eating habits do not really change as a result of this diet. Our advice is to opt for a responsible eating pattern.
